Judicial Independence and Constitutional Amendments

The Colombo Law Society has publicly urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to halt proposed constitutional amendments that would extend the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges. The society warns that such changes could undermine public confidence in the judiciary and judicial independence.

Nothing says "we're definitely not trying to pack the courts" like floating a retirement age extension right after everyone's already suspicious, then getting roasted by the Law Society for it—it's like asking your spouse if infidelity is technically a gray area *after* they find the hotel receipt.
